Good grading is subtle when it is finished: a smooth lawn with enough continuous fall to carry stormwater to a safe outlet.

Cut and fill
High ground comes down and low ground fills in, so the surface has one direction to send water.

Slope toward an outlet
The graded surface is pitched to a spot where the water can actually leave the yard, not just move to a different corner of it.

Compaction
Fill is placed and compacted in lifts to support the planned grade.

Sod or seed
Sod or seed over the graded area can be part of the scope, so the yard is not left as bare dirt.

Common shortcuts and what they miss.
Surface drainage depends on the full slope, not only the visible low spot.
- Add loose dirt only at the low spotAdded material may move the low point without creating a continuous route to an outlet.
- Pour the patio first and grade around it laterA patio poured on ungraded ground just gives the water a flat surface to sit on instead of dirt.
- Add a downspout extension without checking the receiving gradeThe extension changes where water enters the yard, but not the slope it follows after that point.

Equipment cuts and fills to the plan, then compacts it. The graded area gets restored last.
